Best Bookshops in America & Around the World

(A resource and a work in progress)

This reference was first posted at the vincentmccaffrey.com website but now, with the Avenue Victor Hugo Bookshop open again, it seemed to be more appropriate here. We have already received new recommendations from customers and when possible, we will edit older entries for accuracy.

I have often gone hundreds of miles out of my way to visit a bookshop someone said was worth knowing. More than a personal anecdote, the habit is a determining factor in making this list. Would I give up another few hours of my ever-shortening life to go there?. . . Many times I was disappointed. Often they were closed when I finally found them (even in these post-internet days). On a few occasions they were so much better than I hoped that I thought of moving to that town just to be close enough to visit regularly. In ancient times, on our annual family expeditions, the kids became so familiar with my usual refrain upon spotting an interesting but empty store front that they would anticipate me and say “That would make a good bookshop!”

This is not a list of every bookshop in America, nor of the ‘best’ bookshops in America, or the biggest, or the cleanest, or the most politically correct. This is especially not a template of what a good bookshop should be–if such a thing were possible.

Simply, here is a useful list of bookshops, both new and used, that any reader might love. Thus, it is necessarily prejudicial. It is an accumulation of opinion and an attempt to make note of the better ones by specifically being ernest, even if subjective. In any case, the ‘best’ is an illusory vision at best, determined by time and place and circumstance. As Shel Silverstein once noted: “The world is funny, and people are strange / And man is a creature of constant change, and / After you’ve been havin’ steak for a long time / Beans, beans taste fine.” In the right moment, a modest shop can seem like a garden of earthly delight. But human judgment is not eternal (thankfully). Owners change. Key staff leave (or worse!). Financial wherewithal is not a constant.

These are independent bookshops, each with a unique vision and purpose.

The real problem is a small tragedy for me: that I have not been to most of these places. I actually started this project many years ago (some time in the 1980’s), and most of my own favorite bookshops have long since closed. Finally accepting that I had to give up the idea of personally visiting each one, (as I once gave up the idea of reading all the great books) I started collecting recommendations from others, from the internet, and from other published lists. I have not included every bookshop noted in those other gatherings, only the ones which seemed likely to be ‘the goods’ based on a close reading of the review, or out of respect for another habitual browser’s judgment. I gave extra leeway to specialty dealers because they tend to be smaller and more often an act of sheer love. By nature, specialty stores are rarely great bookshops, but they are often a delight for readers devoted to the given genre.

I have undoubtedly overlooked some excellent shops, both new and used, while there are some listed here which do not belong in the company of the others. I hope to correct that over time, with proper guidance from devoted browsers.

Given the time, I would also like to add comments from the booksellers themselves. Clearly, I’ll might need a bigger boat. But frankly, I think the whole thing might need a separate website. However, that will have to be someone else’s project.

To repeat: the stores listed have been individually recommended but are not rated here, one better than another. I have my favorites, as do you. If I missed one of yours, I say again, please let me know. I do not wish to offend someone who has given their best effort to keeping a good shop. And I am not looking to make some universal template for what a good bookshop is. That will always be in the eye of the browser.

A couple more notes: a cat does not make a good shop. I am allergic to cats but kept a store cat for most of thirty years. Cats are a pain. But they eat mice, dance a little, and remind you of your faults. A grumpy bookseller does not disqualify. That standard is set here because I am often one of those myself. But there ought to be something special about the place that is directly connected to the books. Another example: a cafe does not make a good bookshop any more than a cat does. They are just convenient to have around.

Again, I would love to receive comments and recommendations. I will keep them, and as the opportunity arises in the future, I will add them to the list when possible.

The last apology: typos, misspellings, and omissions are mine and I regret them dearly, but if you want to see them go away, you’ve got to tell me about them. I will remain stupid until disabused.
